Bricks Gallery is proud to present Jakob Oksbjerg’s second solo show, Something to Believe. This exhibition, spread across three rooms at our Copenhagen location, features Oksbjerg’s most recent collection of paintings and drawings.
In Something to Believe, Jakob Oksbjerg explores themes of mysticism, the meaning of life, and spiritual belief. Oksbjerg draws inspiration from traditional folklore to create illustrations of mythological landscapes and abstract human figures. Through his fascination with the beauty of nature, he invents an almost dream-like world full of tales of reincarnation, cosmic harmony, and the love between enemies. His paintings invite the viewer on a journey of reflection in the hopes that they will find personal resonance and meaning in each of his pieces.
Painting on thin cotton canvases, Oksbjerg’s distinctive technique enables him to paint through the textile from the back, creating a unique color scheme from the front. A notable aspect of Oksbjerg’s artistic process is that he only applies one coat of paint, so there is rarely any layering; this method requires careful consideration in the choices and blending of both color pigments and binders.
Oksbjerg explains: Something to Believe is a collection of works attempting to embrace both the viewer's and my own need to believe in something - something good, something greater, something that adds meaning to life. I try to express this without pointing to one specific truth but rather by inviting the viewer on a journey through various perspectives.
