Glass or China? Usually round
On a shelf or at the windowsill
A useful object, some might say more decorative
A collector of dust, or a delight for your sight?
A lifeline for the flower natural
Bricks Gallery is pleased to present Motivvase / Motif Vase, an exhibition featuring recent works on paper and canvas by artist Peter Larsen, marking his final attempt to challenge the motif of the vase.
In recent years, the vase has captured Larsen’s attention across his paintings, sculptures and graphics. He constantly reinterprets its familiar form and function with his surreal take on reality. Larsen enchants this everyday object, leading us into an alternate existence characterized by his playful palette and unique symbolism - a world within a world, populated by his iconic characters, each fulfilling their roles.
Some vases appear sturdy, while others seem more fragile and delicate. Inside, we discover vivid scenes and abstract patterns within surreal landscapes - a man skillfully playing the lute, a vibrant flower in full bloom. A blue vase with powerful eyes gazes back at us. Larsen blurs the lines between figure and object, inviting us to reconsider our perceptions of these vessels and their potential to carry complex stories.
